How do I get my warmblood trotter to put on condition?
Hi, I need some help. My horse has ad-lib hay and also gets quite a lot of concentrate (I don't know exactly what it is, as my trainer/owner gives it to him). But we don't understand why he isn't putting on condition the way he should. We'd like a bit more fat and condition on him. He isn't ill, because he's as forward and lively as can be. He's ridden regularly every week but also has 1-2 rest days. He's a warmblood trotter who's now being retrained as a riding horse, 9 years old and a gelding. We've also checked his teeth and they're fine. Tips very welcome 🥰

Hi, how lovely that you have bought a trotter! They are my favourite horses 😊. Do check him for worms and keep an eye out for any signs that he is in pain somewhere. I am also wondering whether you have an analysis of the forage. Even with ad-lib access, the energy and protein can fall short if the forage analyses low. A spell at grass now would help build condition, and you could also try feeding a kilo or so of lucerne and 1 to 2 dl of oil. Beyond that, he will probably stay on the lean side for a year or so, because he has been in intensive training and built up a lot of muscle as a trotter, so the switch to a riding horse is a big adjustment.
