Wet hay, can I still use it?

Bought hay today, small square bales with no wrap. It was meant to be dry hay but it was very wet, especially in the middle. I thought it looked unusually wet, but I felt unsure so I bought it anyway. It was supposedly cut right at the start of July, and stored on pallets in an open shelter with a tarpaulin across the front. She had used something called rock salt on it? There was also a bale that was mouldy, lying in with the others. According to her it didn't matter if the hay was mouldy because you just had to remove the mould and then it would be fine to eat, though I'm not sure what I think about that as it doesn't feel great. The hay was expensive too so it feels such a shame, it cost 6 kronor per kilo. What do I do now? Can it be eaten or what should I do?

Hello!

Oh, what a shame!

Unfortunately the hay looks unfit to feed. That means neither horses nor any other animals should eat it. It is mouldy.

The grass most likely had not dried enough before it was baled. The storage does not sound good either, as dry hay needs to be stored indoors, fully protected from the weather. Contact the supplier and ask to return it and get your money back.

Unfortunately you usually cannot remove the mouldy parts of a hay bale, because the mould's mycelium has most likely spread through the rest of the bale even if you cannot see it with the naked eye.

Nor can you dry out baled hay once it has gone mouldy or started to rot.

I really hope you get this sorted ๐Ÿคž It is such a shame when things go wrong. A real waste of forage that is not harvested and stored properly, especially now when many parts of the country are short of feed for animals.

I hope this answers your questions! If not, do ask again ๐Ÿ˜Š
