Which side should you put the saddle on from?

This is actually an old rule going back to the military, when riders always prepared the horse from one side, led from one side and mounted from one side, because they carried their weapon on the other side of the body, and to keep order in a group riding close together.

Today we know that doing everything from one side makes both us and our horses one-sided, so we should aim to do everything equally from both sides. There is no right or wrong side. That said, some riding schools have rules about which side you lead from or mount on, based on the safety policies they have chosen for their school, and of course you should follow those 😊
