Round-bale feeder dome vs hay rack - which is safest?

I'm going to buy either a round-bale feeder dome or a hay rack with a roof. A round-bale feeder dome strikes me as fairly safe, but it can rub the mane off, and I think the horse can't keep much of an eye on its surroundings with its head inside the dome, so there could be an injury risk if something suddenly happens outside? For the covered hay rack, I'm thinking of buying a ready-made galvanised one. The advantages are that the horse can see its surroundings while it eats, but the downside is that snow and rain can still blow in onto the hay. I'd really like some help working out which of these two is the safest and most practical 😅 Two horses will be sharing it.

Hi!

🐴I would go for a hay rack, largely because of the point you make about it being hard for horses to keep watch while they eat.

🐴The galvanised hay racks with a roof are usually a decent option. It helps if you can move it, since the ground tends to get poached where it stands. Best of all, of course, is to site it on hard standing.

🐴If only two horses are sharing the feed, you probably cannot put out a whole round bale. Use a smaller amount instead, so it does not have time to spoil. That also means a bit of rain or snow on the feed matters far less.

🐴Remember to check there are no sharp edges on the hay rack. I know for a fact that some models a few years back had sharp edges along the roof section. It can be fixed, of course, but it is worth checking before you turn the horses out to it.

Good luck🦄
