What are your best tips for keeping a horse occupied and enriched when it is stabled?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello! For the past few years I have kept horses in stables with an open section at the top of the partition wall (no grille right up to the ceiling). There is of course some risk of injury with this, but if you are sensible about it and put horses that get on well, that are good friends and share a paddock during the day, in stables next to each other, they will often stand and groom and scratch each other indoors too. Little beats the company of other horse friends 🥰

Other things to try are slow-feeder hay nets, salt licks, treat balls and the sort of scratching mat you can fix to the wall. You can easily make your own by screwing the heads off two or three brooms, it usually goes down very well! ☀️ Scattering a few pieces of carrot or other treats for your horse to hunt out is another good activity, because it mimics foraging, a natural behaviour that wild horses spend many hours of the day on.
