What does it cost to keep a horse on a track or outdoor living system, and how does the feeding work?

What is it like keeping a horse on an outdoor living system where they are out year-round? What does hay or straw cost per month if you keep the horse somewhere with several horses and everyone pays together? Is the injury risk higher? Should horses living out get different hard feed, and is it enough for them to have it just once a day? I understand it varies from horse to horse, but it is still fun to hear about :)
Answers from HayHay's experts

The key thing to think about when keeping horses together on an outdoor living system is that they need similar nutritional requirements. Ideally they are roughly the same age, in similar work, and of about the same size and type, because it is hard to control exactly how much each horse eats. Beyond that, you can top up with a little hard feed and minerals once a day, and that works well. The injury risk is much the same as, or slightly lower than, for horses kept in stables or a standard turnout paddock.

Prices and feed costs vary enormously from one yard to the next. The best approach is simply to ask the yard owner or other liveries if you are thinking of moving to a particular place.
