Fear of hacking and of falling off

Fear of hacking and falling off. Around 1-2 years ago a riding anxiety started creeping in (I've ridden for about 5 years). I quit riding school then, but I still rode my sharer horse (which I still do). But now I'm starting to think that fear is because I've never fallen off. And I'm scared of falling off. And now when I hack out on my sharer horse I feel scared when we canter, because I'm scared of falling off. How can I get over this fear?

Fear can be hard, but remember that feeling scared now and then is completely natural. We sit on large flight animals, and we have to learn to live with the risks that brings. We can think about safety, but working with horses always carries some risk. Having a healthy respect for it is, I would say, no bad thing. If your fear leaves you feeling held back, you can work on it in several ways. Often the first step is to accept the fear. From there, think about how you ride when you are relaxed, ideally in concrete terms, and try to carry that into the situations where the fear usually shows up.

Good luck 💫
