Fear of jumping after a fall

Last week I came off badly during a jumping session. Yesterday I had a dressage lesson and just from cantering I got a bit scared. Now I don't know how to work through the fear. Have you got any tips? ❤️

Becoming frightened after an accident is completely natural, but it can sometimes feel really tough. It helps to accept that you are scared, so that you do not become "afraid of the fear" and start worrying well in advance, thinking things like "what if I am scared next time too" or "what if the fear takes over completely". You will probably feel a little scared for a while, and that is fine.

A good way to meet fear is to think about what usually makes you feel secure. You mentioned that cantering frightens you. Consider what makes you feel safe while you are still in trot. You might start by riding over poles, then low fences in trot, before going on to canter short distances. How does your body feel when you are calm and secure? What do your shoulders feel like, how do your feet sit in the stirrups? Try to focus on those things as you challenge your fear bit by bit, and it will ease off as you go.

Be kind to yourself too, and let it take a little time. That is completely natural.

Good luck!
