Handy things to have at the yard as a first-time owner
Hi!
How exciting, your first horse of your own, the very best of luck ππΌπ
The list of things you could conceivably need for a horse is almost endless π
Here are a few suggestions:
π΄ A leather headcollar for travelling, plus a spare ordinary headcollar and a lead rope
π΄ A lunge line
π΄ A rope headcollar or a cavesson for lungeing and long-reining
π΄ A professionally fitted saddle that suits both you and your horse. Bear in mind that a horse's body can change shape, so you often need to check the saddle and other tack fairly regularly early on
π΄ A worked-out feed ration. Based on an analysis of the forage you have at the yard, you can either calculate your own ration or get help from a feed adviser. Do get in touch if you would like more help with this and our feed advisers can give you some tips
π΄ A good, qualified farrier
π΄ A list of vet numbers, both for daytime and for anything that happens in the evenings or at weekends. It is reassuring to sort this out before anything goes wrong
π΄ Hi-vis, hi-vis and more hi-vis. It is so important that both you and your horse are seen in the dark
Yes, you could go on forever π
Remember to take your new horse's temperature every day for the first few weeks. That way you will spot any infection coming on and get a good idea of what your horse's normal temperature is.
Good luck ππ΄π¦π΄π
