Tips for midge bites and insect bites on horses

Have you got any tips for midge bites on horses? Or general tips for bites and stings? My horse is completely covered in midge bites! Today my mum bought her a fly rug and a fly mask. I've also been using fly spray on her, but it doesn't have much effect. Any tips for the bites?

Hi!

Midges, horseflies and other biting insects really can be a serious nuisance for horses at this time of year.

Here are a few tips:

πŸ“Œ It is a good idea to bring horses in during the spells when the insects are at their worst, which is often when it is hottest. They can then rest and have some peace from the insects for a while.

πŸ“Œ A fly rug and fly mask are worth putting on when things are at their worst if you cannot bring the horse in. Do take the rug and mask off regularly, though, so the horse is not wearing them all the time. They rub easily when it is hot and horses are sweating.

πŸ“Œ A field shelter (or a sun and insect shelter) in the paddock helps. It is usually in summer, when it is hot and the insects are out in force, that horses like to seek shelter while they are turned out.

πŸ“Œ A horsefly trap actually works really well. Here is one option: https://www.bole.se/bromsfalla-taon-x?channable=027b86736b7500363030313332a1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1rqkBhCTARIsAAHz7K3EvlmV3Lbm1VB_6g3xWL0U52uDlDD7Ld_2uF27EPHEFhxKbPKuQTQaAol_EALw_wcB
