Fear of jumping after a fall

Fear of jumping. I've been afraid of jumping for a long time, I think the fences look high and I'm scared of losing control of the horse. Yesterday I jumped a super kind school horse who jumped fine when I rode well, but when I got unsure he did too, so I chose to stop and not jump any more. My fear of jumping went away for a short while but then came back again when I flew off a horse into the fence. How do I get over it again?

First of all, fear is completely natural. We are dealing with large flight animals, and on top of that we are asking them to jump over fences, which is not without risk. I make this point because our instinct is often simply to want to "get rid of" the fear, and that usually means trying to push it away. When we do, the fear tends to grow. Try instead to accept the fear and let it be there. You can do what you want to do alongside the fear, and that is how you will find it shrinks. Challenge yourself with what frightens you, a step at a time. Focus on how you ride when you feel safe, in practical terms. How do you hold the reins? How do you ride the horse forward? Try to do exactly the same when you are doing things alongside the fear.

Good luck 🌸
