Moving my horse to a new yard

We're moving my new horse to a new yard. What should I keep in mind so I can make it as good as possible for her, without the stress?
Answers from HayHay's experts

It depends a bit on what you can control yourself. Try to keep the yard routines consistent, around turnout and bringing in, feeding and so on, and most yards already have a clear plan for that. Knowing what happens during an ordinary day gives the horse a sense of security. Settling in takes time, both finding new horse friends and getting used to a new environment.

Keep the early sessions undemanding and build in a few extra short breaks, so she can take in the new arena, the new indoor school and the routes you hack out on. Take a companion along if you need to.

Read how your horse seems to be handling the change. If she feels tired, tense, unfocused or unsettled, that may well be down to the move, so adjust your riding to suit. Some horses take longer than others 😊
