Mucking out the paddock

Is it important to muck out the paddock, and if so how often should you do it?
Answers from HayHay's experts

Hello! Good question, mucking out paddocks is perhaps not the most appealing job. But yes, it is important to muck out paddocks, especially winter paddocks, which often get muddy and where the horses trample the droppings in. Mucking out the paddock is an effective way to limit the spread of various parasites. It is also unhygienic for horses to walk around in their own droppings, and the trampled-in muck contributes to phosphorus run-off and eutrophication.

Ideally the paddock is mucked out every day, or at least a couple of times a week. There are several benefits to putting down hardcore and gravel around the gate, feeding area and water in the paddock, the spots that often get poached, muddy and hard to clear. Mucking out little and often, and using a powered wheelbarrow, can make the work easier. Cheering you on and good luck!
