How can I get my confidence back in jumping after being eliminated at a competition?

Over the last few weeks I've had low self-esteem, mainly in my jumping. It started when we were eliminated at 2 jumping competitions in a row because the horse was tense and not in front of my leg (and I got nervous and didn't ride properly). Since then the gremlins have stuck around. I have thoughts like I'm not giving my horse the right chances, that I'm embarrassed, that I don't believe in myself. I used to have confidence and sometimes it feels completely gone now. What do I do to "come back" mentally? ❤️‍🩹

As you describe yourself, confidence is a perishable thing. Events like the ones you mention can knock it quite quickly, but the upside is that it can come back fairly quickly too.

You do describe some negative thoughts that sound as though they have run away from what actually happened. You had two bad competition days where, for various reasons, you did not ride as you wanted. It sounds as though your thoughts then spiralled into meaning you are a bad rider and owner.

One way to build confidence is to train your mental flexibility, which means holding more than one thought at once. You can both produce a poorer result and ride below your ability at a competition AND, at the same time, be an ambitious, capable rider who wants the best for your horse. Making mistakes is human, and an important part of developing and moving forward.

Think about the things you DO that have made you feel more confident. Is it certain exercises? Riding for a particular person? Hacking out? Looking after the horse? Groundwork or work in hand?

Doing more of the things that usually make you think more positively about your riding can really help to rebuild your confidence. The very best of luck! 💫
