Recovering after a riding accident

I had a riding accident a while ago and I'm now scared of being on horseback, but I really want to get back to it. I won't be able to ride for many months! Anyone got any tips?

I am sorry to hear you have been in an accident. Feeling afraid afterwards is completely natural. Most people need to give it time before they rediscover their trust in the horse and in their own ability.

For most riders, working back gradually is the best approach. Spend time around the horses and feel secure handling them. Then, when you do ride, remember that the fear will be there and that is perfectly fine. Many people become afraid of the fear itself and think they have to get rid of it. Instead, let the fear be there and focus on settling into your body. How does your body usually feel when you are secure? Find the contact with the saddle, the feel of your feet in the stirrups, your hands around the reins. The more time you spend on horseback, slowly finding your way back to being present in your riding, the more the fear will shrink.

Good luck, I hope your recovery goes well. It will ease. And remember: be kind to yourself. 💞
