Seat and hands on a sensitive, quick horse

I've started riding a sensitive mare who is naturally quick. Sometimes I can't keep up when we trot over the poles, she tends to "run" into the canter (she does it for everyone). With her I can go from canter to halt. In the canter I try not to have such a need for control, but I'm afraid she's going to bolt. Then I lock my hips and shoulders, how should I be thinking about it? When I get like that, she and I tend to canter at full speed and I can easily bring her back. On top of that my instructor has started nagging me to soften with my hands, but I have a tendency to lock my wrists, how can I work that out of myself?

As long as you feel unsure or afraid that she might bolt, your body will go into defence and tense up, and the usual result is that we hold on with the hand, lock the arms and shoulders, and grip with the knees.

So work on feeling comfortable, let things take their time, and challenge yourselves when you and the horse feel ready for it.

Take plenty of deep breaths, focus on your task, and think "take and ease" as you take a restraining rein-aid. The more relaxation you find and the better you get to know each other, the softer you will be able to become. Then you can work more on your seat. But start by feeling secure first 😊
