Shavings as bedding - pros and cons

A few questions about shavings. Are they any good? Do they get wet easily? Do you have to change them often? What do they cost? Do horses like them?

Hello!

🐴 There are different types of bedding based on shavings. Planer shavings, sawdust and shaving pellets are a few of them, and each in turn comes in different versions and from different brands. To check prices, I think the best thing is to search online or contact a supplier. Bedding prices have risen sharply over the past year, so unfortunately it is not cheap.

🐴 All forms of shavings absorb well. They only get wet if you use too little bedding in the stable, or do not muck out thoroughly enough.

🐴 You can manage the bedding in the stable in different ways, so depending on whether you muck out fully or run a deep-litter bed, how often and how much you change at a time will vary. You rarely change it all at once, except when you do a deep clean and wash out the stable.

🐴 Horses like a dry, soft, clean stable or loose-housing system. Whether it is shavings or another bedding probably matters less to them.
