The training scale
The training scale is a systematic guide for educating and developing the horse at a pace that protects it both mentally and physically. Following it makes sure you do not load the horse with difficult work too early, before it has developed the basics: rhythm, suppleness and straightening.
If you skip steps and ask for collection or impulsion before the horse is supple, you risk straining its body and causing long-term damage. Working through the scale in the correct order, from rhythm and suppleness up to collection, builds the horse's strength, suppleness and balance in a sustainable way.
For more on the training scale, the Swedish riding manuals Ridhandboken 1 and 2 (no direct UK equivalent) are well worth a read.
