At what age should horses stop being ridden?

How old should a horse be before you stop riding it? I have a horse I share who is fairly old, and I'm wondering when a horse should stop being ridden? He's so happy when we hack out and school in the arena, but I'm nervous that I'm sort of "ruining" him :)

There is no specific age to give! It depends entirely on their health, the state of their teeth, whether they take in enough energy and hold onto enough muscle. As long as a horse is sound and in good condition, most do better for keeping moving, so they do not stiffen up. I know several horses over 30 who are still ridden and thrive on it 😊
